you have another chance at p:ear

I am not sure how you may have missed Ryan Birkland's art if you are you around PDX. If this is your first time hearing about him you must check him out at p:ear in the next couple weeks. You really should come out to First Thursday and see his great works. Great as is in some huge work as well as the "healthy energy" and "newlife" he gives to old windows and glass. I have only peaked at this show a bit though the window of P:EAR's new space. I look forward to the work he too may have done with the youth.

May2nd

Photo from OrganicFunny - I have told you about what I suggest the night of May 2nd- either Red Dress Party or p:ear's annual fundraiser ! But what should I do during the day? Go to a CPR training class or a fashion show at The Nines? Both of the events support nonprofits. One is more of a skill training and one is more of culture awareness...hmmm buzzby Brian

Hand2Mouth’s newest performance explores love, family, and looking alike

Photo from H2M - I am not talking about Couples that look like Siblings. I am wondering about Everyone Who Looks Like You- the upcoming show by Hand2Mouth Theatre -I thought it was going to be called Things We Talk About. If you have seen a H2M show you know the actors and the creators like many family and make the best of whatever they are given and make it work. I think some of them already kinda do look alike. May 14-24 you can see Hand2Mouth come together again at MilePost 5 and put on another great show. This piece is inspired from their own lives and will be very "For Real". H2M states, "Using their own lives and families as source materials, the company members re-create, imitate and initiate the complexities of family life – of living and breathing with those who know you best and least. As this house of five moves through furious dances, ear-piercing fights, unlikely reconciliations and meditative storytelling, a picture of universal family life emerges from the raw and personal. This springtime performance is a prelude to the full fall premiere. “The idea of performing a story about your family is as old as storytelling itself. But this new performance pushes our company into new, difficult terrain. We set an impossible task on ourselves; to convey the love, confusion and feeling of belonging in each performer’s own family relations. From this mash-up of multiple family sagas we hope to create a family setting surprisingly familiar to the audiences own experiences. We’ll do this via a dense blend of performance styles so as not to allow our story to slip into easy clichés or let audiences ever think I've seen this story before,’” says Jonathan Walters, Hand2Mouth’s Artistic Director. Everyone Who Looks Like You. May 14 –24, Thursday – Sundays, 8 p.m. Milepost 5, 900 NE 81st Avenue, Portland, Oregon $15 general admission, $10 on Thursdays. $25 for May 15 Opening Party. Tickets: mail@hand2mouththeatre.org, 503-235-5284

New Nonprofit and Call for Artists

Thought you might like to know that The Kingstad Gallery is holding a new Call For Artists and a new group/nonprofit forming...Here's a bit of information about it:
Regional Arts & Music Project (RAMP) is a nonprofit arts organization dedicated to entertainment and education. Our focus is on artistic development, educational opportunities, and accessibility to all arts genres through performances, exhibitions, and events for the community and the Portland Metro region. RAMP includes The Kingstad Gallery, Beaverton Civic Theatre, and Jester Comedy Club, and makes it's home at the Kingstad Center in Beaverton, Oregon.

Here's the new Call:
Parallel & Convergent: Stories of Labor & Art
Exhibit dates: 6/5 – 9/5/09 Application deadline: 5/15/09
The arts and labor movements travel parallel paths, often converging at startling points in history when art reflects the lives and struggles of the working classes in extraordinary detail.
The conditions of workers have been portrayed by artists since the beginning of the industrial revolution, and even earlier by songwriters and musicians.
The arts have supported, documented, and benefitted from labor movements and government programs, such as the Works Progress Administration of the New Deal in the 1930s.
If history is an indicator of the future, then we are currently experiencing the same fertile ground for artistic expression, collaboration, and expansion as witnessed during the 1930s.
What are the parallels between then and now?
How are the challenges of today reflected in our art?
How is your art reflecting the current climate of job loss, tough times, and potential for reinvention?
How are the arts again uniting, inspiring, and moving us forward?
Artists are often viewed as other, and not really made of the same stuff as the rest of society. If there is truth in the cliché of ‘the starving artist’, it is that the creation of art is, after all, labor.
Works that address issues of labor, making ends meet, issues of family, the work of the artist, and the arts as a tool for inspiring cultural expansion, will be represented in this timely exhibit.

RYZ Launch Party for Caldera

Lizard Lounge sent me this hot invite via Twitter - First Thursday April 2nd from 7-10pm
The official Portland launch of RYZ Wear ! "Founded by a group of ex-industry sneaker geeks who believed in a better way, RYZ isn’t just another fashion brand. It’s a new way of thinking about the fashion business that includes getting input --and ultimately forming a partnership -- with their customers. Unlike the fashionista elite who dictate style from on high, RYZ invites anyone to design the perfect pair of shoes. They’ll produce the most popular designs, sell them around the world, and share the profits with the designer. Everybody wins.
Music & Entertainment by DJ Verbz Beer: Widmer Brothers Brewery Benefit: 15% of event sales go to Caldera ! I love calderaarts.org Bonus: Save 10% on regular price items from 7-10pm. (Not to be combined with other offers) I am not sure if I should wear "My Cops Hate Me" shoes or the "Caveman" design...you will have to be there and find out!

Violence is not cool

I recently got some great information from Raphael House of Portland about the Rihanna Drama-"
When pop singer Chris Brown assaulted his girlfriend Rihanna, also an award winning recording artist, there was an immediate outcry of support for Rihanna.
Within a few short days that support waivered and people in the community started blaming Rihanna for the violence that was perpetrated against her, many saying that she did something to provoke such a horrific attack. There are even those who did not explicitly blame her, but still implied that there was something she did wrong or could have done to prevent it and have refused to hold Chris Brown responsible and accountable for this attack.
"
What can you do?
Know the Facts. Myths about domestic violence are rampant in our society. From believing that domestic violence only happens to poor people to blaming the victim for staying in an abusive relationship, perpetuating false information about domestic violence is detrimental to survivors and the agencies working to help them. Familiarize yourself with the facts here: National Coalition Against Domestic Violence http://www.ncadv.org/files/DomesticViolenceFactSheet(National).pdf EndAbuse.Org http://endabuse.org/userfiles/file/Children_and_Families/DomesticViolence.pdf APA http://www.healthyminds.org/multimedia/domesticviolence.pdf Why Doesn't She Leave http://www.ncadv.org/files/Why%20Doesnt%20She%20Leave.doc
Raphael House of Portland is a multi-faceted domestic violence agency dedicated to fighting the causes and effects of intimate partner violence in a variety of ways. We offer emergency shelter in a confidential location, safety planning and advocacy on a 24-hour in-house crisis line, non-residential advocacy in cooperation with the Portland Police Bureau, and transitional housing and advocacy through our Transitional Housing Program. More than 100 families are served in the emergency shelter each year, and over 5,000 callers are offered safety planning and advocacy on our crisis line. An additional 400 survivors receive non-residential advocacy services each year.

The mission of Raphael House is to provide a foundation of hope for a life free from family violence, and we have been working in this community—offering domestic violence survivors the tools they need to build violence-free lives—for more than 30 years. Raphael House serves a diverse community of families escaping domestic violence, and also works to eliminate the causes of intimate partner violence through educational outreach in the community.

Power of the Purse, sorry I missed it

I was recently hanging Tiffany, with one of my BFF's and she was going on and on about a yummy brownie recipe with black beans ! She kept trying to sell me the idea - no joke- she was interrupted like three times in the store with people asking about her J.Crew purse. (I was shocked, I think they knew it was you) I was telling Tiffany about Portland's Power of the Purse and how it is such a great event for Girls Inc. of Northwest Oregon. I was impressed to hear- This year, Ziba was paired up with PGE's CEO Peggy Fowler. Thank you Core77 ! "Power of the Purse pairs Portland's most notable leaders, artists, entrepreneurs, and philanthropists with local designers to create the "handbag of their dreams"." Did any of you go?

Arts Action Alert

Wow, Look who is on the CAN Board. I signed up and have sent a few emails to help out and no wonder I have not heard back... These are the busiest and most involed Art Leaders in Portland. The Creative Advocacy Network, a new non-profit working towards a regional dedicated funding solution for the arts, is working hard to make sure that the Regional Arts and Culture Budget is preserved by Portland City Council. On March 12th at 2:00 RACC( 2008 annual report) will be giving their “State of the Arts” presentation to Portland City Council and describing how last year's investments in the arts benefitted the City. It is important that City Council see strong support and solidarity from the arts community.

The Arts CAN, and must live here. Please RSVP to info@theartscan.org if you think you can make it on March 12th. Tag, your it. BuzzByBrian

I am Endorsing the Rally Holly

It's never too late to endorse a good rally. This one today I am traveling to is to support Stand for Children! Serena's cousin Rebecca explains, "Our goal is to show the Legislature that Oregonians stand with them and behind them as they make the tough choices demanded by the current economic crisis, but we also want to make a statement about how important education is for Oregon's kids and call for them to prioritize and protect our schools. Specifically: Invest what we have wisely, funding programs that produce the best results. Make prudent use of reserves and the federal stimulus that comes to Oregon. Responsibly raise revenue, and change the way the state forecasts revenue to end the boom-and-bust budget cycle. Pass this on to anyone who might have the day off and wants to feel the energy of a major rally for change. " Look for me at the State Capitol. Quick sign up for a bus!

Hunger Growing Rapidly

PearlGirl keeps sending me reminders how we can help Oregon Food Bank !  I finally realized how we can join together and make this good work-greater.  Oregon Food Bank reaches over 9,000 people each month.  It feels so good to support a great organization this time of year. Consider even $10 to Donate.  Or send this to a few friends?  Bloggers Click Here.  Let's not do Happy Hour this week.
