Hidden Portland: The Museums

The ink is still wet so you will want to be at the First Thursday Opening at Reading Frenzy and get one of the Limited Edition handmade books by Carye Bye. Hidden Portland: The Museums, is Carye Bye’s first self-published book. This is her premier publication but she is also known by many as “The Local Museum Lady” for her amazing map of Hidden Portland – an online museum guide as well as her famous bike rides that she organizes for different groups in Portland. The 100+ page guide book/artist book contains mostly museums in Portland. She highlights mostly free and funky places and pairs them with special illustrations. Reading Frenzy’s 1st Thursday Art Show will feature the postcard-sized original illustrations & will be available for purchase.

I actually was able to be with the artist at a few places in the book! She opened my eyes to some news things at Portland Art Museum, Dan & Louie's Oyster Bar and Voodoo Doughnut. Yes, those last two are in the book and you have to buy it to find out why! That's the hidden-part of this book. Discover Carye Bye as she has already made quite the impression on Portland with her great work on Red Bat Press.

Plastic Plastic Everywhere

This is Gareth minding our new job as we go for our regular walks- we are collecting plastic bottle caps for @Eyes_Aflame. Bridget has others helping her save and search for caps as well. Amaren, the only one I know

I have known Amaren Colosi for over two years now. I am proud to say I had seen her work in various places and publications in Portland as well as bumping into her in all the right places in Portland. I really enjoy the story her photography tells and love the great span of her expertise from food & landscape to products & Polaroids. She is enjoying freelancing as well as her own art projects. Film Premiere at Lizard Lounge !

Race or paddle Thursday to the Epicocity Film Premiere "A River's Last Breath". This is the Epicocity Project that Lizard Lounge is hosting ! TheBuzz in Beaverton!

I have to be honest- I don't leave downtown Portland too often but last November Reatha and I ventured to Beaverton and were happy to visit The Kingstad Center. The Kingstad Center is home to the huge Kingstad Gallery and were shocked to see the number of different local and regional artists that were feature in the show, the varying style and forms as well.

But seriously, here is some very hot buzzy stuff that is just about to hit the streets:

Incredible artists turned up for this one -Several from across the country including New York, Miami, New Mexico, and L.A.
Becca Bernstein, nationally recognized portrait artist from Portland whose star is currently shining brightly, is one of four guest artists, joined by Buck Braden, Celeste Bergin, and Mark Randall.

In the exhibition SHOOT YOU – SHOOT ME artists Modou Dieng and Damien Gilley will examine the relationship between contemporary guerilla warfare, high fashion, and the artists approach to the creative process, while attempting to breakdown the predictability of perceived artistic production, display, and the consumption of mass imagery. The artists of SHOOT YOU – SHOOT ME will serve as rebellious infiltrators, presenting work through a process that mirrors the stages of the marketing of culturally consumable imagery to the en masse public. Their work explores the concept of passive sociological complicity through the exploration of warfare, advertising, role- playing, and the activities of leisure as critique of contemporary culture.

I Heart Graffiti

I was walking yesterday to the nau warehouse sale with my Popular friends raving about Portland and how we love being overwhelmed by so many options of things to do on a Sunday. As we crossed over Northwest Broadway we started into a debate about graffiti in PDX and its proper place.  (I of coarse wearing my Jean-Michel Basquiat jacket.)  I won the debate by overwhelming them with graffiti history, siting that schools have classes that teach or discuss it, I raved about the interviews in Parallel Strokes,  name dropped I know someone that knows Banksy, I met fab 5 freddy, and started talking more locally about installations and how they need to see the movie Wild Style. They rebutted by reminding me about the upcoming 8 local PDX cleanups. I still won.
